Design principles

In design, less is more and it is pertinent to have a simple design that adequately follows all the design rules rather than having elaborate designs that won’t cut it. This is why it is essential to be in tune subconsciously with design principles as it saves stress, makes your work neat, and also ensures conformity.

Notable design principles like typography, use of image, color combination, layout and composition, and negative or white spacing are vital to grasp and master effectively.

USE OF COLOR

The right color combination is what makes a design bad or good as humans are known to react to color so before embarking on the visual design, it is vital to do adequate research on what kind of design is needed and decide which color blends with that brand. primary colors are red, green, and blue, and it is from those three colors other colors emerge. It should also be noted that we have several color mix styles like Monochromatic, Analogous, complementary, split complementary, triadic, and tetradic colors.

Also, understanding the feeling that colors add to design and what they represent.

Notable examples

  1. Red for love and power
  2. Yellow for happiness and positivity.
  3. Blue for calmness and trust.
  4. Green for nature and health.
  5. Orange for creativity and friendliness.
  6. Purple for luxury and spirituality.
  7. White for purity and virtue.
  8. Black for power and elegance.

Having an idea of what these colors stand for and the kind of brand one is working on would make for an easy choice on what colors would resonate with the value of the brand.

TYPOGRAPHY

Typography

Typography is another design principle to be followed adequately. the choice of font usage, as well as font size, plays a big role in how designs shape out as it ensures readability and capturing the attention of the audience on what is important by using a particular font heading and what represents the body. There are various typography text styles out there, it is best to make do with simple and effective typographies rather than going overboard all in the guise of being creative in which the essence of the whole design could be lost.

NEGATIVE/WHITE SPACING

The use of Negative or white spacing is also an integral part of the design principle as it could be the difference between a good design and a bad one as negative spacing gives us breathing room.

An example of what negative spacing does to a design

It sorts out the cluster and spaces all the elements in a design as it shows how each component or texts relate to each other and which stands on its own thus, It effectively changes elements and layout in design. It should also be noted that padding, margin, and line-height are essential components of white spacing.

LAYOUT AND COMPOSITION

They are the foundation of design as they give your work structure and make it easier to navigate. A composed layout would make all the difference if gotten right.

Design composition

principles of design to ensure proper layout and composition are listed below

  1. Proximity:- using visual space to show a relationship in your content. ensuring all related items are grouped while groups that are not related together should be separated to visually emphasize their lack of a relationship making your work to be easily understood at a glance.
  2. Alignment:- This is the arrangement of an item in a line and without consistent alignment, your work could look disorganized.
  3. Contrast:- This is a difference in lightness, brightness, and/or hue between two colors that makes them more or less distinguishable.
  4. White spacing:- it refers to the spaces between your content, between lines, and even the outer margin. It helps to define and separate different section thereby giving your content room to breath
  5. Repetition:- It is a reminder that every object should have a consistent look and feel. There must be conformity between two or more designs or text. An example is if you have a specific color palette or header and body typography, look for a way to echo it across the whole design as consistency makes your work easier to read.

Thank you for having a read and, I hope you found it useful.
